Exhaust manifold - replacement.

It is said, that a cast iron manifold under "normal" circumstances stands up for 8 - 12 years before it is fit for replacement, that is before it corrodes and leaks. This corrosion can come about almost any place, e.g. a hole can arise at the outside or the hole can come about inside towards the exhaust air, so sea water runs out through the turbo. This is bad, because the turbo might suffer damage, which in the end might cost a lot of money getting the turbo renovated. So be attentive to whether the turbo gets another sound, - babbling!

The 8mm bracket mounted at the side of the manifold, which the intercooler is fastened to, might be corroded at the side facing the raw water. To be sure it doesn't corrodes through when the new cast iron manifold is in place, the problem has to be solved, e.g. by placing a thin stainless plate between the bracket gasket and the 8mm bracket.

Rimfaxe's manifolds had been on for 15 years, - delivered the goods so to say, and to prevent an inconvenient brake down in the middle of the season, they were replaced while the vessel was on the hard 2004/05. The dismantled manifolds showed no signs of corrosion leaks, so it is all in the air how long they might still have been fit for use.

To the replacement was used stainless steel manifolds and I should in this way under all circumstances for a very long time (always?) be protected against corroding and consequently, - another replacement.

If you possess just common sense for the craftsmanlike, there will be no difficulties in performing the replacement.
